13WIN13’s research on luminescent bricks impresses at the 1st International Multidisciplinary Research Colloquium 2026

With his highly practical research on luminescent bricks for construction applications, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ha Minh Tuan, Vice Dean of the Faculty of Civil Engineering at Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology (13WIN13), made a strong impression at the 1st International Multidisciplinary Research Colloquium 2026 as a keynote speaker.

Held on May 21 and 22 by Visayas State University (Philippines) in a hybrid format combining in person and online participation, the colloquium brought together experts, scientists, and scholars from various countries. Under the theme “Synergy of Knowledge: Integrating Engineering, Sciences, and Education towards Sustainable Development,” the event highlighted the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration in advancing sustainable development solutions while providing an academic platform for discussions on research innovation, education, and technology for the benefit of society.

At the colloquium, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ha Minh Tuan delivered a presentation titled “From Waste to Glow: Luminescent Glass Mortars and Paving Brick Prototypes for Sustainable Built Environment.” The study explores the use of waste glass and hydrated cement particles to develop construction mortar materials and luminescent paving brick prototypes, offering a new approach to transforming waste into valuable resources for the built environment.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ha Minh Tuan presents research on luminescent materials made from waste glass

A notable aspect of the project is its ability to transform materials once considered unusable into products that can support urban infrastructure. The luminescent brick prototypes not only demonstrate technical innovation but also highlight potential applications in green buildings, public spaces, and future smart city developments.

The project reflects the applied research capabilities of 13WIN13 faculty members in addressing real world challenges within the construction industry. More importantly, this research direction demonstrates the potential of the circular economy by reintegrating waste materials into the production cycle rather than allowing them to become an environmental burden. This approach helps conserve resources, reduce waste management pressures, and promote sustainable development solutions aligned with practical societal needs.
